About

The MAC Investment Club is a student operated and funded investment Club with over $100,000 of assets
under management. Established within McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Business, the
Club is at the core of DeGroote’s student community. The MAC Investment Club provides McMaster students with a unique hands-on learning experience in the Capital Markets industry. The MAC Investment Club pools money from sponsors, corporate investors and individual investors with aim to maximize investment return, and encourages general members to actively participate to further their investment knowledge.

Since inception, the MACIC has seen explosive growth in assets under management and memberships. In 2008, the first year of operation, the Club accumulated $18,500. In 2010 this amount grew to over $100,000. Further reflecting the increasing popularity and recognition of MACIC has been membership growth. In 2008, the Club began with 77 members, in 2010 the Club reached a total of 250 members. For the coming 2011/2012 year, the MACIC hopes to amass $125,000 in assets under management and 300 members.

For the coming 2011/2012 year, the MACIC plans on returning to its roots of education through action. A renewed focus will be placed on education. The Club plans on offering tutorials and seminars on a wide range of topics across the capital markets. These topics include seminars on equities, technical analysis, commodities, fundamental analysis, derivative, fixed income, etc. Included, will be two special topics on significant financial events like the financial crisis/recession that began in 2007/2008. These seminars will be presented live by an executive team member and will be available in hard copy on the website immediately following the presentation.

In following with education through action the Club will also implement a bi-weekly update that will be sent to investors and Club members via email. This newsletter will include updates on portfolio positions, important news on invested sectors, and why positions have changed or not changed.  The Club is looking to give members the option of watching a live stream of the meetings and downloading videos of the stock pitches fromthe website.

Research Process

The executive team monitors the markets on a daily basis to form a collective macro perspective on the economy, and then employs a top down research approach to decide which sector should present each week.  The Club is divided into sector teams to represent the different industries in the economy.  Each respective sector has a Fund Manager and several Research Associates that follow the markets to seek out attractive entry points.

Research reports are constructed by the respective sector teams prior to presenting to the general members, and posted on the website weekly (Past reports can be found in the resources tab at www.macic.ca). Following the presentation, invested members cast their votes with either a “yes” to add the stock to our portfolio, or a “no”.

Each share purchased is an investment of $250, which represents 1 vote, and each member is entitled to a maximum of 6 votes (there is no limit to the amount a member can invest).  Over the school year, the Club constructs a diversified portfolio and liquidates the holdings at the end of the term.  Upon liquidation, members receive a cheque with their initial deposit plus/minus the gain/loss.

Sector Teams

Conducting investment research and making regular presentations to members, MAC Investment Club also acts as the principle outlet for investor participation in club operations. Each team, assigned to a specific economic sector, is composed of a Fund Manager and Associates. Fund Managers, experienced in personal investing and budding student leaders guide Associates in their personal development and the generation of research reports and presentations to the investors at bi-weekly meetings.

Executive Team

At the heart of each successful year of operations is the MAC Investment Club’s executive team. The Executive team is composed of nine driven individuals working interdependently to run the Club efficiently, effectively, and professionally. Along with executing the Clubs mandate, the Executives represent all investors. The MACIC Executive team is responsible for ongoing operations, event organization, fundraising, external sponsorship, and more.

Board of Directors

The Board is comprised of the current CEO, past CEO’s, a neutral general member, and a recent addition
to the Board of Directors, the Club Advisor Dr. John Siam.  The Board of Directors present strategic
oversight to operations, and ensures the Club continues to be the pre-eminent student Investment Club in
Canada.
